Film just part of creative process

KRIST Novoselic’s L7: The Beauty Process came with a lot of charm, even if it didn’t contain the special effects offered by George Lucas.

The satirical rock film spiced with concert footage of the Los Angeles female quartet made its Canadian premiere at Vancouver’s Blinding Light Cinema May 20 — less than 24 hours after Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace opened around the world.

Novoselic joked about the coincidence at the cozy Gastown Theatre and hinted he may return this summer with one of his two musical projects, Sunshine Cake. The film and music collaboration with members of Sky Cries Mary is completing a short-film trilogy. Sunshine Cake, Sky Cries Mary and Novoselic’s principal band, Sweet 75, are planning a west coast tour for July.

If it doesn’t come north of the border, it will likely be broadcast on the Internet. Novoselic has been talking with Microsoft about wiring his bus, a former Pacific County public transit coach, with all manner of cyber gear.

Novoselic is working on Sweet 75’s second album with partner Yva Las Vegas. He’s also keeping the Nirvana legacy alive. A boxed set, with rare and live tracks, is in the works. And he’s busily compiling content for the official Nirvana web site, nirvana.com. It will be linked to his own home page, <murkyslough.com>

Novoselic said MTV is producing a documentary on Nirvana. Rather than a narrator, producers are employing singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain’s own words from audio and video interviews. It could even contain 8mm films Novoselic and Cobain made in high school in Aberdeen, Wash.

In the meantime, L7: The Beauty Process is available on home video through Olympia, Wash.-based K Records.
