Sunshine Cake

August 6, 1997

This maybe old news but i thought it where worth to add and i didn’t come up with a better place to put it.

Krist Novoselic, Roderick Romero, Bill Rieflin, & Jeff Greinke Cook Up Sunshine Cake

Yet another Seattle “side project” has popped up. Krist Novoselic (Sweet 75, ex-Nirvana), Roderick Romero (Sky Cries Mary), Bill Rieflin (Ministry, KMFDM), and ambient artist Jeff Greinke have formed quite an odd project dubbed Sunshine Cake, which is a euphemism for marijuana brownies. Sunshine Cake is actually a 32-minute film and soundtrack, according to Romero. “It’s almost impossible to explain,” says Romero. “It was filmed here on the coast and in Croatia — Krist went there recently. It’s like ambient landscapes. It’s a tripped- out story of a preacher who goes on a dream drive through fields of hay and he ends up in Croatia and other places.” Were you stoned when you did this? (We had to ask.) “Oh, yeah,” snickers Romero. Sunshine Cake has only held one performance — July 29 at the Ballard Fire House in Seattle. They play the film, which has no dialogue, and perform the music to it as the film is airing. Needless to say, it’s quite arty.

After reading our story about Sunshine Cake (allstar, Aug. 6), the film/ soundtrack project featuring Sky Cries Mary’s Roderick Romero, Sweet 75’s Krist Novoselic, Bill Rieflin of Ministry and KMFDM fame, and Jeff Grienke, our fine friends at High Times magazine dropped us a line to share Romero’s recipe for his Darbury’s Sunshine Muffins. (Uh, remember, folks, marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes in some states.) The recipe will appear in the October issue ofHigh Times in an article titled “Sky Cries Marijuana” about how the band’s Anisa Romero overcame Hodgkin’s disease with the help of medicinal pot. Here are the ingredients: female leaves of marijuana, 1 carton creamy smooth tofu (extra firm), 1/2 cup flour,1/2 cup cocoa, 1 cup dark brown sugar, 1/3 cup canola oil, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, a handful of pecans (or any other nut), a touch of cinnamon, and a splash of strawberry vinegar. Directions: grind as many leaves as possible until like dust. Add tofu and mix until consisistency is green goo. Add flour, cocoa, sugar, and oil. Periodically lick the spoon. (These directions are obviously straight from Roderick.) Mix in baking powder, nuts, cinnamon and vinegar until dark, dark green. Pour into pan. Bake at 350 degrees…
